If you’ve been on LinkedIn or talked to new engineering grads lately, you’ve probably heard the buzz: VLSI design is really taking off right now. I’ve been following the Indian tech scene for over ten years, and I can tell you that this isn’t just hype. What makes VLSI design so popular right now? India is finally becoming a global player because chips power everything from smartphones to electric cars and AI servers. Companies and the government are both spending a lot of money on semiconductors.

The chances are real and getting bigger fast. In 2024–25, the semiconductor market in India was worth about $45–50 billion. By 2030, it is expected to be worth $100–110 billion. That’s a strong 13–15% CAGR, which is much faster than most other industries. Why? Every piece of technology, from cars to data centers, needs chips that are smarter, smaller, and work better. And you know what? VLSI, or Very Large Scale Integration, is what makes those chips work.

The India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) 2.0, which was announced in the 2026 Budget, is the big news. It gives more money for Indian IP cores, equipment, materials, supply chains, and training centers on top of the original ₹76,000 crore push. Ten big projects worth ₹1.6 lakh crore have already been approved in states like Gujarat, Assam, and Odisha. These projects will be finished by the start of 2026. Micron’s assembly plant in Gujarat is busy, Tata is building a fab in Dholera, and big companies are opening design centers in Bangalore and Hyderabad.

This isn’t just a theory; it’s creating jobs for thousands of people right now. The industry is on track to make more than a million jobs by 2026–27, from designing and verifying chips to testing and making them. What makes VLSI design so popular in 2022? AI, 5G, electric vehicles, and the Internet of Things have all made things go faster since then. India isn’t just putting phones together anymore; we’re also making the brains that make them work.

Is VLSI a Good Job in India? Real Talk: The Good and the Bad

Yes, if you like fixing things, working with hardware, and coming up with new ideas that could change everything. VLSI engineers are at the cutting edge of technology. They put billions of transistors on a small silicon die while keeping power use low and performance high.

Pros:

Good job security (the chips won’t go away)

Global exposure: a lot of jobs require you to work with people from the US, Taiwan, or Korea

If you have the right skills, you can move up in your career quickly

Pay that is fair and goes up quickly

Cons:

You need to know a lot about digital electronics, Verilog/System Verilog, and EDA tools, so it takes a long time to learn

The deadlines for projects can be very close

It might feel like drinking from a fire hose the first few years

But the truth is that there aren’t enough skilled workers to meet the demand. A lot of people are getting jobs at Intel, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, AMD, Samsung, and Tata Electronics. People who are good at their jobs and have worked with AI chips can easily make more than ₹30 LPA and stocks. Not bad for a field that used to be seen as “niche.”

The future of VLSI in India is bright

India’s VLSI future looks very good. By 2030, India wants to design and make chips that meet 70% to 75% of its own needs. These needs include everything from medical equipment to defense systems. AI accelerators, automotive chips for electric vehicles, and low-power IoT devices are the most popular areas right now. For instance, Tata Electronics’ new factory will need hundreds of VLSI experts to check the designs, which will have a ripple effect.

The Qualcomm center in Hyderabad is hiring more people to work on chipsets for 5G and 6G. With the Design Linked Incentive program, even new businesses are making their own intellectual property. It’s also good to have global tailwinds. Businesses want a reliable “China+1” hub after COVID and worries about the supply chain and geopolitics. India is a great place to do design work because it has a lot of English-speaking workers and is less expensive than other places. Design work is worth 70% of semiconductors anyway.

What I Find Most Interesting About VLSI Design

I keep writing about this because it’s my favorite part. VLSI isn’t just writing code for gates; it’s also being creative in very small ways. You need to think about things like, “How can I make this chip run twice as fast while using 30% less power?” In a data center, even a small change can save millions of dollars on power or battery life.

I still remember going to a design center in Bangalore where engineers showed me a chip that lets phones use AI right away. It was like magic to see billions of transistors work together so well. The work is always interesting because it involves math, physics, and software. Also, you can see your designs in things you use every day, which makes a real difference.

Examples from the real world that back up the claim

In 2025, Micron’s plant in Gujarat started making things to sell.
