How to Learn About Family Medicine and the Fellowship Path in India<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Family Medicine (MD\/DNB) teaches you how to treat people of all ages for everything from the common cold to chronic conditions, preventive care, and even minor surgeries. On paper, it’s not as “glamorous” as cardiology, but it’s very rewarding and in high demand, especially in tier-2 and tier-3 cities and corporate wellness programs. After Family Medicine, a fellowship usually lasts one to two years and focuses on one area of medicine.<\/p>\n

Some of the most popular ones are Geriatrics, Emergency Medicine, Palliative Care, Diabetes Management, and even Sports Medicine and Adolescent Health. These are not the same as super-specialty DM courses, which we’ll talk more about later. During the fellowship, you get a salary similar to that of a senior resident, which is between \u20b940,000 and \u20b980,000 per month at good institutes and sometimes more at private hospitals where you have more responsibilities. It’s not a big jump from residency, but you’re getting more specific knowledge. Dr. Priya, who graduated from a Delhi school with a DNB in Family Medicine in 2023, did a one-year fellowship in Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders.<\/p>\n

She made about \u20b955,000 a month while she was in training. After her fellowship, she became a consultant for a corporate hospital chain in Gurgaon and now makes \u20b91.2\u20131.5 lakh a month plus bonuses. Because she had a lot of experience with FM and a focus on diabetes, she was a good choice for running corporate health programs.<\/p>\n

Do fellows make more money than residents? The Fair Comparison<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Short answer: Yes, but not by a lot during training. Institute rules and NMC guidelines control both residency and fellowship stipends in India. Residents (MD\/DNB Family Medicine, years 1\u20133) make \u20b960,000 to \u20b91.2 lakh a month in government colleges (more at AIIMS\/PGIMER). Private companies often pay less, between \u20b940,000 and \u20b980,000. Fellows (after Family Medicine) are usually treated like senior residents or something similar, so they make between \u20b970,000 and \u20b91 lakh a month on average. Some high-end programs in big cities pay between \u20b980,000 and \u20b91.2 lakh, plus benefits. Fellows usually have less academic pressure and more freedom in the clinic, which feels like a step up. But you won’t make any real money until after the fellowship.<\/p>\n
